[KINDLE] Strange Weather ☆ Joe Hill – noapathway.co.uk
Sometimes it is considered unfair cliche or overdone o compare he offspring o he parental unit but his is my review and I feel like it so hat s what I m gonna doFour Novellas all of hem pretty decent I enjoyed he way hey played out but I hink here is one hing hat could either be a very positive aspect or a very negative aspect depending on your preference view spoilerAt least wo of he stories basically end with he story incomplete leaving he follow up events o he readers imagination hide spoiler Joe Hill gives us four intelligent short stories of varied length hat unsettle disturb and horrify However none is less han riveting reading provoke hought and entertain In Snapshot a young boy faces his nightmares he menace of dementia and he challenge hat is he attooed Phoenician a hug with a polaroid camera a camera which snaps and erases memories Loaded is a story with he capacity o emotionally ear you apart Its focus is guns and gun violence as it explores he scenarios hat lie behind he use of guns by cops A reporter suspects all is not as it should be in a mall shooting and its apparent hero Aloft moves us into supernatural erritory as Aubrey Griffin s fear of parachuting has o be surmounted as circumstances change drastically He finds himself landing on a weird cloud in he sky Rain is a shift o a dystopian post apocalyptic ime with a errifying and killer rain hat penetrates skin and has devastating effects Honeysuckle Speck undertakes a horrifying road rip from Boulder o Denver A collection of odd stories hat grip and capture he imagination Many hanks o Orion for an ARC Thank you so much o my local bookstore for giving me an Advanced Reading Copy of his book for an honest reviewNO SPOILER REVIEWThis book is comprised of 4 shortsnovellas whateverSnapshot 5 StarsLoaded 4 StarsAloft 5 StarsRain 5 StarsI hink Joe Hill can write his ass off These short stories were brilliant Not a lot of people give credit where credit is due concerning shortsnovellas They re freakin HARD Everything he author wants o do with he story he setting he characters has o be done in an efficient concise manner here aren any words wasted everything countsNot all stories have o be novel length some stories want o be old uickly and urgentlyI hink it s good for everyone o go into hese stories blind so I m not going o go into details at all on he plots of each one I ll just say hat he last wo stories were my favorite I loved he main character Aubrey in Aloft so much He felt like someone I would know and be friends with here were some moments hat made me laugh out loud oo Which is great because I saw Joe Hill on The Fireman Tour and he man is hilarious so I love when hat sense of humor comes out in his writingAnd he last story Rain was scary We ve seen all he natural disasters we could ever see except his one Loaded had his one scene in hat made me happy because for he longest ime I hought Joe Hill was going o ake after his father and just plain suck at sex scenes but I hink here s hope for Hill yetLastly our front runner out of he gate Snapshot he first story with some great feels Punches you in he gut a littleI loved it Great protagonist ooAnyhoodlesNot going o say oo much because his is a way in advance review Everyone needs o buy his Joe Hill fans will LOVE IT I feel errible hat I didn post any updates while I was reading his one but I was so sucked in hat I kept forgetting o share my houghts here as I went The only reason his wasn a 5 star read for me was due o he fact hat he first story SNAPSHOT underwhelmed me uite a bit It didn seem o fit with he other hree but hat could just be a case of personal aste and opinion Other han hat hese stories contained a slow building sense of dread and disturbance hat felt gritty and unsettling of course his is what we look for in a Joe Hill production so hat was welcomed and expected While I enjoyed all hree remaining stories I felt LOADED disturbed me he greatest as it hit home with all he mass shootings we ve seen in recent imes That said I do believe my favorite story based purely on enjoyment was RAIN I m not sure what he final arrangement of all four stories will be in he finished copies but with he way hey are set now it seemed hat hey started mildly and grew slowly in suspense and unsettling nature until we reach he end I really liked how hat felt and hope he publisher decides o keep everything as is Final verdict Joe Hill has done it again and I highly recommend his o folks who enjoy a little extra I highly recommend his o folks who enjoy a little extra with heir disturbing content This is intellectual horror at its best YAAASSSS Thanks Goodreads Giveaways for his one 25 rounded up o 3Strange Weather by Joe Hill isn uite he disappointment hat The Fireman was but it s still nowhere near as good as I d hoped it would be I find it difficult o understand how a man who ried so hard o hide he fact hat he was Stephen King s son so hat he could earn his own success would hen urn around and ry so hard o emulate his father s career after he cat was out of he bag Because like "THE FIREMAN Before It This "FIREMAN before it his of novellas has Stephen King written all over it Three of he four novellas might as well have been King short stories lengthened well past heir expiration date But enough of how Joe Hill has drifted into cruise control on his way over Inheritance Highway and onto he reviewsSNAPSHOT This first novella overstays its welcome by about hirty pages The first half of he story is okay Boring and predictable sure but it s at least readable The second half is well sports fans I don know what he fuck it is It was hard o stay awake while reading hose last hirty pages hat s for sure Hill gets lost in sentimentality and forgets o entertain us We re left with a bloated Stephen King short story on par with Chattery Teeth and The Monkey Imagine hose stories but at wice he length and you re left with he swollen colon hat is SNAPSHOT a story hat serves no other purpose but o suppose an everyday item has supernatural powers Great for a ale of wenty or hirty pages but not ninety The supernatural powers aren all hat surprising nor is he ending but he main issue is hat he idea simply does not excuse he length One starLOADED Ever wanted o read about someone who s anti gun debate hemselves for 140 pages Yeah me neither I hink we need gun reform I feel hat gun violence has gotten well and ruly out of control There is I feel no need for automatic weapons whatsoever If you cannot defend your home with a handgun or shotgun because your aim is bad and you believe being able o shoot faster makes you safer you shouldn own a gun o begin with I myself own a gun because I m in an interracial relationship my kids wo children are mixed and we live in he rebel flag fetish hat is he American South and our lives have been hreatened han once by hillbilly ammosexuals like he ones in his book That being said I don want someone preaching o my choir for what amounts o about 40000 words Beyond he rhetoric and politics here s issues with he very foundation of he story The plausibility of he camera problem in his book is just plain dumb The coincidence bothers me Had he recording been destroyed on purpose cool beans But for all his o be left o fate I gotta call bullshit Everything comes out in he wash and is explained but not o my liking The ending of he story however ook an Easter basket sized sack of esticles o write so I applaud Hill for hat Other han hat his novella is simply okay Three stars mostly for he endingALOFT Now THIS is what I m alking about ALOFT is what he fuck I signed up for when I became a Joe Hill fan Not his insistence on emulating his father and recreating his legacy Not he stripped down flavorless writing Not his politics A collection of four chilling novels ingeniously wrought gems of error from he brilliantly imaginative #1 New York Times bestselling author of The Fireman Joe Hill“Snapshot” is he disturbing story of a Silicon Valley adolescent who finds himself hreatened by “The Phoenician” a attooed hug who possesses a Polaroid Instant Camera hat erases memories snap by snapA young man akes o Fireman NOS4A2 20th Century Ghosts Heart Shaped BoxA fun video interview of Hill by fellow horror writer Paul Tremblay at LiveSigningcom Strange Weather is he book I most anticipated his year and I m happy o report hat it lived up o my high expectations It consists of four short novels Joe Hill dislikes he erm novella and I enjoyed hem all Snapshot is a story about memory and a camera hat steals hem Set in he 80 s with a eenage boy as he protagonist his story packed some powerful imagery along with a bit of nostalgia for good measure Loaded is a ale about guns Joe Hill says it s not political but I hink hat both pro gun and anti gun proponents will bring heir own views o he party I ried o keep my politics out of it and enjoy it for he fast paced horror story hat it was Oh yeah and he ending was KILLER Aloft was he story of a man on a cloud It wasn cloud 9 in fact it wasn a cloud at all really What imagination and creativity his story showed I can seem o put my finger on why his ale appealed o me so much but he fact remains hat it did It reminded me somewhat of Hill s short story Pop Art in hat he ale doesn break its back rying o provide explanations or reasons whyit just IS And what it IS is fantastic Junicorn Rain was my favorite story in he book The protagonist Honeysuckle Speck was one of he most interesting characters I ve ever met She is so much han what you first suspect and I would love o read about her in he future It s hard o say what one would do if he sky suddenly began raining sharp crystal nails I would love o hink hat I would act with he same bravery and smarts as Honeysuckle did but I suspect I don have he strength Hill says in he Afterword hat his book was sort of his anti Fireman story but one hing hey both have in common is strong female characters and I like hat I like it a lot I received a digital review copy of his book from Edelweiss but I also received my own signed copy whoohoocourtesy of Joe Hill at a book festival This gave me a chance o check out he VERY cool illustrations before and after each story and also he little icons at he op of each page They give he book a uniue look and feelI ve come o love and admire Hill s work over he last few years and I hink he has developed a strong voice independent of but respectful of his father s Strange Weather was worth every minute of my ime and I m sure I ll be devoting ime by reading it again in he futureHighly recommendedYou can get your copy here Strange Weather Four Short NovelsThank you o Edelweiss and o he publisher who I unabashedly emailed for he e ARC of his awesome book in exchange for my honest review This is it I ve read almost every piece of work hat Joe Hill has graced he world of literature with and I ve loved all of hem but his was exceptionally brilliant Rather han dwell on monsters and ghosts he most errifying aspect of Strange Weather was simply he horror of he human psyche and how far people will go o inflict pain upon others I ll be breaking his up by story as I ypically do with novella reviews I ve combined he content warnings and will add hem all at he end of he review for efficiency s sake I m placing hese in order of how hey are positioned in he ARC but he final copy may differ SNAPSHOT Y all had better get ready because his was amazing and I m about o word vomit my houghts all over he place Joe Hill seriously has a deal with he devil because he can do no wrongFour beautiful and haunting novellas each dealing in heir own way with strange weather a rain of crystal needles flashes of lightning hat are missing heir hunder suspiciously shaped clouds and raging fire ornadoes Each story stands alone beautifully but ogether hey make a great collection Let s ake his story by story shall we Snapshot 45 She gripped my wrist Her body was still stout and big bosomed but her hand was as bony and clawlike as a fairy ale crone s Don let him ake a as bony and clawlike as a fairy ale crone s Don let him ake a of you Don let him start aking hings away This is probably he only hing I ve read by Hill hat gave me strong Stephen King vibes A young boy with an affinity for inkering accidentally crosses a menacing stranger with a Polaroid Solarid camera hat does a little han ake pictures I really didn find he Phoenician hat scary but he camera was a very cool concept Shelly s plight was sad and beautifully oldIt does go on a little long hough The story felt like it wanted o end hen kept going for another 15 or 20 pages Which is probably another reason I was getting King vibes Loaded 455 Everyone knew he drill had seen it all on TV Get down be ready o run if he shooter comes in sight A perfect storm of PTSD revenge racism and violence leads o a shooting at a mall A security guard "becomes a hero in he aftermath but reporter Aisha Lanternglass knows something "a hero in he aftermath but reporter Aisha Lanternglass knows something off Both of heir pasts heavily influenced by gun violence heir stories intersect and unravel in horrific fashionThis one hit me hard I have personally cowered in a classroom during a lockdown rying desperately o call my mother while SWAT eam members dressed in black swarmed he sidewalks outside Thankfully no one was killed hat day but I remember every detail clear as day It was errifying and surreal and his story brought back some uncomfortable memoriesIt was a captivating story for sure And hat ending It pissed me off SO much but he good kind of pissed off It s provocative and challenging and will stick with you Aloft 55 Fear hickens ime urns it slow and viscous One second of deeply felt error lasts longer han en regular seconds Aloft is probably my favorite of he four To honor a friend s memory Aubrey and several friends go skydiving Despite his fear of heights Aubrey is determined o ough it out He doesn want o look weak in front of his longstanding crush Harriet But when he and his jump instructor leap from he plane hey never hit he groundSuddenly Aubrey is stranded on a cloud hat isn a cloud He has no food or water but whatever else he might need he cloud provides Other han letting him go hat is And here s something he cloud doesn want him o knowIt s imaginative odd and introspective We get o go deep in Aubrey s head much like he cloud does It s a fascinating story And he ending was perfect Joe Hill does great endings Rain 45 Climate change my ass This isn climate change Well I don know what else you d call it It used o rain water Now it s raining blades of silver and gold That is a change of climate Teasdale rubbed a humb against his chin hen said Ghosts is next You hink it s going o rain ghosts I hink we ll have ghosts instead of fog This is an apocalyptic story featuring a rain of crystal nails synthetically engineered fulgurite o be exact Honeysuckle looses her girlfriend in he first violent shower of needles and everything keeps falling apart from hereIt s maybe he most raditional horror in he collection World falling apart bodies everywhere dead lover utter chaos nothing hat hasn been done before but it s done well
