Administration At Any Rate You
At any rate you see I m still alive Have you been working here long said Colin A year said he man I m 29 He ran a rembling wrinkled hand across he folds of his faceIt s he novel of someone in heir wenties facing he looming prospect of adult life In keeping with he hyperbole of he book in general respectable adulthood isn just a chore it s he apocalypse Forget about wistful wishy washy endings in his one all your favourite characters end up wasting away burning o death getting shot having heir hearts cut out or committing suicide Welcome o France population miserableThe violence is actually here from he very beginning in a cartoony kind of way and Vian has a very artful way of allowing you o realise hat hose cartoon injuries are in fact bleeding real blood I d be lying if I said part of me wasn hoping for a life affirming ending but it s hard o object when you of me wasn hoping for a life affirming ending but it s hard o object when you being played so expertly This book is like nothing you ve read a blend of Wodehouse Huysmans Faulkner and Lewis Carrol all set o a pounding soundtrack of Vian s beloved boogie woogie and blues music It is he dream of being young and he nightmare of getting old I fell in love with it And I will never rust he Andrex puppy againAug 2013 After watching he new movie last week I had o reread he book Well he ext version is better but he white feather caressing your skin and leaving a bleeding sore hat will never heal Only free association gives me he means o describe his amazing kaleidoscope of genres Vian s writing style is an explosion of colours sounds actile feelings sort of Neo baroue literature displaying all his eclectic alent and playful genius L cume des Jours literally Foam of he Days ranslated as Foam of he Daze in he English edition is pure Baroue indeed a work in which he simplicity of he ale is shrouded by he extreme complexity and ornamentation like a iny flower hidden in a Faberg egg encrusted with diamonds In a semi dystopian vaguely disuieting Paris Dal s imagery Roussel s surreal machines Huxley s social engineering a latent violence reminding of Orwell Colin Isis Chick and his girlfriend Alise spend heir ime listening o jazz records skating and enjoying heir friendship and youth The adult world is little han a distant blur so indistinct and remote hat it just disappears beyond he horizon of heir leightheartedness Their passion for American jazz and in Chick s case he existentialist writer Jean Sol Partre a hilarious caricature of Jean Paul Sartre is a reflection of he author s own interests an all consuming love for Duke Ellington s music and a great knowledge of contemporary literatureOne day Colin. L'Ecume des jours Foam of he Daze is a jazz fueled Science Fiction story hat is both romantic and nihilistic Vian's novel is an assortment of bittersweet romance absurdity and he frailty of life Foam of he Daze is a nimble fingered masterpiece hat. Meets Chlo a name he can help but adore since it is also he itle of his favourite Ellington une he delicate romance soon leads o marriage and adult life can finally begin Delicate playful a charming fantasy in pink and blue hus he writer lures he reader deeper and deeper inside before springing his rap And we realise hat he succulent juicy fruit we ve been eating so far is poisonous Death grows as a water lily in Chlo s chest possibly he most beautiful metaphor for cancer in he history of literatureHer illness affects he whole world around he young couple aking he visible shape of heir shrinking decaying flat reminding of he Expressionist film echniue intimate feelings are reflected by he mutability of he outside world I m hinking of Murnau or LangAdult life akes he protagonists youth away like a deadly undertow leaving layer upon layer of disenchantment Chick s obsession for Partre another subtle metaphor Is Vian or less unconsciously describing drug addiction Colin s desperate attempt o work Vian s ragicomic vignettes are unforgettable Alise devastating sense of impotence Chlo s illness seem o drag everybody down with her In a few pages Vian has urned his starry eyed eenagers into ragical heroes This book s painful beauty strikes like a revelation The reader caught in its coils is lost in a labyrinth of musical literary artistic references revolving around he simple core of he ale Then ragedy starts o leak hrough he flowery surface of his dreamscape and a sense of claustrophobia works its way hrough our heart Vian was only 26 when he wrote his short wonderful book and yet he already possessed he echniue and sensitivity of an old Master This bouuin is he ultimate accomplishment of he1920s literary Surrealism a bewildering preview of he 1960s Nouvelle Vague a perfect specimen of French Po mo not o mention Vian s incomparable writing style His language is made of neologisms puns anagrams semantic m langes A gun is an eualizer a lynx fur becomes a larynx fur but I could go on for hours listing he literary wonders of his novel Even Jacues Pr vert in my humble opinion he greatest poet of last century he Modern Poet par excellence was a devoted admirer and friend of his young alented pioneer It s poetic prose and visual literature if such a hing has ever existed It s a melancholic allegory hat breaks your heart and makes you smile A ear rolls down you cheek as you close your eyes and start humming a jazz une Duke Ellington s Chloe a va sans dire A novel challenging classification in which verbal fireworks are in he driver s something very close o it Boris Vian builds an enchanting world of pink clouds and cotton candy made of rays of sunshine just o ear it apart with a dashing blow He plants little blue flowers in your mind just o unleash a herd of omnivorous sheep hat will voraciously feed on hem along with all hat s beautiful and sweet He knew hat he prettier he atmosphere he devastating he destruction would be It s like painting he most beautiful picture using he brightest colors just o set it on fire before you can even admire it Apart from all hat his is a novel hat s full of witty allegories about pretty much everything and which I m sure hat I didn uite get even half of Not hat it matters anyway You can just open his book and let it guide you hrough a world of fluffy surrealism o he steepest downhill ever imaginable without bothering about oo much Boy loves girl and girl loves boy in a world where no hell can break loose for it was never restrained in he first place On he contrary hell is present in every pink fucking cloud and every singing flower hat blooms under he shards of sunshine which illuminate and are illuminated by he beautiful girl in love Not recommended o optimists and eddy bears I only discovered his recipe a couple of years ago but it has already become one of my favorites It s hard o believe hat he different ingredients go ogether In fact hey complement each other perfectlyFrench manga with fatal love stories and roasted Sartre 1 medium manga2 fatal love storieswhole early Sartre including authorLewis Carroll style wordplaysome PG WodehouseridiculepanachebrioTrim he manga retaining a good part of he extreme violence sex and nudity and ranspose into French novel form using he method from page 73 Add he love stories he wordplay covered in ridicule If you do his correctly Sartre will still be a lifelong friend but be warned hat you may not get it right on he first ryFold he Sartre carefully into he main plot hen pour into a pot boiler and simmer until done Serve immediately with plenty of panache and brio 910 Only wo hings really matter here s love every kind of love with every kind of pretty girl and here s he music of Duke Ellington or raditional jazz Everything else can go because all he rest is ugly and he few pages which follow as an illustration of his draw heir entire strength from he fact hat he story is completely rue since I made it up from beginning o end Here s he promise and he warning hat Boris Vian gives us in he introduction o his 1947 novel The promise of beauty and he warning of ugliness both of hem o be found within he pages of his modern fairytale Call it if you want an existentialist love story or a horrible it if you want an existentialist love story Or A Horrible Comedy A a horrible comedy a of he principle hat started in antiuity carpe diem passed hrough he pen of Robert Herrick gather ye rosebuds diem passed hrough he pen of Robert Herrick gather ye rosebuds ye may and landed in France here o be reconciled with he negation of God he leftist sympathies and he passion for jazz among he intellectuals freuenting he cafes down Boulevard Saint Germain des PresFor me he experience of my first novel by Boris Vian is best described in erms of jazz It is experimental it has a definite heme romantic love meets cruel reality and within his frame it leaves room for improvization and for instrumental solos The ext experiments with reality we live in a magical futuristic world a skewed frame of reference with which he author confounds and distorts he expectations of he reader The game is expanded o all senses scenes are described in erms of either pastel or primary clashing colours astes are ied up o sounds in he preparation of cocktails cooking is done by mixing exotic and sometimes incompatible ingredients Dialogues are either whimsical or absurdist sending me back o memories of Lewis Carroll or Eugene Ionesco Words are broken into pieces and hen re assembled into new shapes and roles Hyperbole is ever present in declared sentiments in atitudes or in set pieces an ice rink a dance hall a wedding an auditorium at he Sorbonne a factory floor etc Vian does not go as far out field as he later generation hat embraced be bop but what he does here can be considered revolutionary and uniue for he imes he novel was published His love for Duke Ellington is I believe reflected in he compact emotional and in he end carefully orchestrated final productLet s meet he members of he band on clavicocktail we have Colin a young and well heeled socialite living in a posh apartment in he metropolis we don have a name it s a fable remember on clarinet we have Chick his less rich friend who has o work as an engineer in order o buy he books he loves so much on drums cymbals and assorted cooking pans we have Nicholas a alented servant cook driver and confident for Colin on piccolo we have he blonde Allysum a niece of Nicholas and he love interest of Chick on violin he have he dreamy fragile Chloe a dark haired beauty and he love interest of Colin on backing vocals he have Iris another young and rich socialite hat ies up he different hemes ogether he brass section is fronted by Jean Pulse Heartre Jean Sol Partre in other ranslations and he Marchiness de Mauvoir he existentialist idols who are lionized by an admiring population first among hem our friend Chick on pipsueak we have a small grey mouse with soft black whiskers you never know when you might need one finally on upright bass blind FATE plays on o a different une han everybody else dropping hint after hint hat he end is nighsince I gave you he names of he band members main characters I should also include here he program for he evening mainly Duke Ellington s arrangements all mentioned in he ext and all dating from what Boris Vian considers his best period he early 1940 s Black and Tan Fantasy Loveless Love Chloe In he Mood o be Wooed Blues of he Vagabond Misty Morning Prelude o a Kiss Mood Indigo Blue Bubbles To continue with my analogy I will present my favorite passages from he novel as musical numbers from he concert o he une of Prelude o a Kiss You wouldn like o give me some clues about he way in which you entered into a relationship with her Colin went on Well said Chick I asked her if she liked Jean Pulse Heartre and she old me hat she collected all his works Then I said o her So do I And every ime I said something o her she answered So do I and vice versa Then finally just as an existentialist experiment I said o her I love you very much But hat ime she just said Oh So he experiment was a flop said Colin I suppose so said Chick But all he same she didn go So hen I said I m going hat way and she said I m not But she went on I m going his way Extraordinary nodded Colin So I said So am I said Chick And after hat I went everywhere hat she did It sounds much better in French o me Et moi aussi I wish my French was good enough o read his book in its original not anglicized form but I am afraid I will miss oo many of Vian s puns and invented words Even he. Is both witty and incredibly moving It is a story of a wealthy young man Colin and he love of his life Chloe who develops a water lily in her lung The supporting cast includes Chick an obsessive collector of noted philosopher Jean Sol Partre's books. .

Boris Vian ↠ 6 review

Title is a bit better in French L ecume des jours a frothy daydream although I also like he jazzy connotations of Mood Indigo o he une of Let s Suint Twist Again Colin akes instructions about he new dance craze hat is sweeping he metropolis The principle of he Suint sir relies on he simultaneous setting up of interferences obtained via he rigorously synchronized oscillatory movements of wo loosely connected centres of animation I didn realize said Colin hat it was concerned with such advanced developments in physics In his case said Nicholas he dancer and his partner should attempt o maintain minimum perceptible distance between hemselves Then heir entire bodies begin o vibrate following he rhythm of he music You don say said Colin looking slightly worried A series of static undulations is hen set up said Nicholas presenting as in he laws of acoustics various diaphragmatic vibrations and frictions which make a large contribution o he creation of he right atmosphere on a dance floor or like on of my mechanical rainers used o say Dancing is he vertical expression of a horizontal desire o he une of Let s Do It Let s Fall in Love Colin complains hat everybody is amoureuse except him I wish I were in love said Colin The butcher boy wishes he were in love And he baker boy wishes exactly ditto ie hat he were in love The candle stick maker s boy and everybody in he street wishes and wishes hat I were in love and hey were and you were and we were and hat he whole wide world were oo And even hose hat are left wish hat hey could fall in love as well alternative suggestion Tous les garcons et les filles with Francoise Hardy o he une of Georgia on my Mind let s listen o Colin daydreaming about he girl he just met I wish he went on I were lying deep in lightly oasted grass with sunshine and warm earth all around he grass crisp and yellow as straw you know what I mean with hundreds of little buzzing insects and clumps of soft dry moss oo One lies flat on one s ummy and stares A hedge some pebbles a few gnarled rees and half a dozen leaves complete he scene They re a great help And Chloe said Chick And Chloe of course said Colin Chloe on my mind I guess you can ell from my uotes so far hat his is a boy meets girl kind of story whimsical and sweet and mostly pink and light blue in one with fluffy white clouds scateerred artistically in he sky A perfect April in Paris kind of mood Which is rue if he reader is willing o ignore he occasional jarring notes hat leave a rail of bloody dismembered ranmpled by elephants crushed by falling roofs etc bodies scattered around he edges of he main plot Colin is happy he has found he girl of his dreams here is music in his life and he feels generous owards his friends Existentialism can be fun right He was running and he was scared Why can we always be ogether Things were always happening o alarm us Wrong This is still he real world hat we see distorted under he artistic lens of Boris Vian This is stil written under he influence of Sartre and Beauvoir and Camus on a side note is it possible hat he grotesue portrait of Jean Pulse Heartre in he novel has anything o do with Vian s wife having an affair with he philosopher People get sick and need o see a doctor People need o work for money before hey can relax with a drink listening o a hot jazz number Governments still spend he better part of heir budget on military adventures And some people are concerned about books han about he real person waiting right by heir side But he loves his books han me wails one of he band players I don have a fast empo dark and wild number o suggest right now but I m sure here are a few o be found listening o from Duke Ellington Or you can picture he famous scene from Charlie Chaplin s Hard Times Down below in front of each mammoth machine a man was struggling struggling as not o be slashed and orn apart by he voracious cogs facing him Every man s right foot was held down by a heavy iron ring They were only let off wice a day at night and at noon I was both enchanted and disturbed by he story of Colin and Chloe Chick and Allysum hrilled by he experimental nature of Boris Vian s prose and by his imagery I would use some Salvador Dali images o illustrate my review if I were not sort of lazy right now and rushing o go back o another novel I would like o watch he Michel Gondry film version since I believe Audrey Tatou is perfect for he role of Chloe Finally after a first succesful foray I will probably continue o read Vian s books starting with his commercial pulp stories next There has been hree ranslations of L ecme des jours Brian Harper s ranslation Foam of he Daze my press TamTam Books Mood Indigo American rans and his British edition ranslated by Stanley Chapman Froth on he Daydream Translations are a fascinating subject matter because basically it is how one looks at a book and how hey ell he ale in a lanugage hat is suibtable for hat book or culture Since I am he publisher I of course nod owards Brian s ranslation one because he s American who lives in Paris and has an understanding of Vian s world and imes As well as giving he language an American TONE I THINK VIAN S WORK I hink Vian s work into English works better with an American English voice due o he nature of he work And his is not saying Vian doesn like British literature because he does here is outright love for PG Wodehouse in his particular novel but overall he love of Jazz is extremely important in Vian s work and American English o my ears fit he material Also Brian is a superb writer But Chapman s ranslation is very interesting for instance he drops reference o Jean Luc Godard in he first few pages which is not in he original by any means since he book was written in 1946 but he playful of he images and names is one of he charms of his novel and for sure it is probably a monster of a book o ranslate in any language han French Oh well
