An Honorable Defeat The Last Days of he Confederate GovernmentWilliam C Davis gives us a wonderful look at he Confederate government during its last days in Richmond and on Firing Schedules for Glass - The Ultimate Online Marketing Guide For Social Good Companies the Cabinet in place and held meetings in each city ashey stopped Natural Stone in the Built Environment tory Internet Marketing for Smart People to regroup Imagine being onhe run and following a president hat had he illusion hat he could regroup Thankfully General Lee and General Johnston did he right hing by surrendering and did not go he guerrilla warfare route hat Davis advocated Even when Davis was down o 1500 men he still had he hought hat he could come back o defeat he Union In he end he was capture in he woods outside a ent rying o walk away in a shawl not a dress as rumor had it Well written with he aftermath of he lives led after he war I found his o be a very good book on he subject William Davis wrote one of my favorite books 1998s THREE ROADS TO THE ALAMO which I highly recommend I have also read his 1995 A WAY THROUGH THE WILDERNESS he Natchez race and he civilization of he southern frontier which I recall being a bore and an unfortunately forgettable read So here for a long while sat on my book shelf his book about he end of he confederate government Which I found fits somewhere between hese other wo volumes The book s first half is well done interesting and educational and he second half slow and mostly difficult o get hrough The hrust of AN HONORABLE DEFEAT was he personality and policy differences between Jefferson Davis he President of he Confederate In February 1865 he end was clearly in sight for he Confederate government An Honorable Defeat is he story of he four months hat saw he surrender of he South and he assassination of Lincoln by Southern partisans It is also he story of wo men antagonists yet political partners who struggled o achieve heir own differing visions for he South Jefferson Davis he. ,
Overnment and his last Secretary of War John C Breckinridge As he world is crumbling around hem and Richmond surrounded and Lee about o surrender Davis and Breckinridge prepare o escape Richmond and argue how he war should end or if it should end at all Davis comes off as a ridged and unpopular President who can come o erms with defeat and ries over and over again o keep Generals from surrendering and encourages a guerrilla insurgency Breckinridge who had been he Vice and over again o keep Generals from surrendering and encourages a guerrilla insurgency Breckinridge who had been he Vice of he United States just before Lincoln s election Breckinridge ran against Lincoln and carried south in 1860 Is The Hero is he Davis s book Breckinridge was never a big advocate for succession and now does not want he war o end in a farce adding death and destruction o his beloved South The real hero in all his is Lincoln Grant and Sherman who were willing o negotiate very honorable erms and only hoped he leaders of he Confederacy would just escape and leave he country Lincoln of course was assassinated just before his all came o an end So he first part of he book is about hese wo men Davis and Breckinridge and heir fight over how o proceed This is all very interesting and well done As hey escape hey ake he reasury and slowly he book urns into an escape adventure story This could have been entertaining but he level of detail just undermines he momentum of he narrative We learn almost where hey slept each night on he journey how much money was secured distributed and perhaps most interesting was hat he disbanded and deserting Confederate soldiers became he biggest hreat o Davis and Breckinridge Soon Davis is caught wearing a woman s overcoat and shawl pretending o sneak off o get water For years he rumor and facts of his rying o escape in woman s clothing would haunt Davis and his reputation As Davis is captured we follow Breckinridge as he escapes o Cuba England and eventually returns o his home in Kentucky But when Davis and Breckinridge are no longer in conflict a lot of he story losses its steam This is not he fault so much of he author but of how history played out he story he set out o ell So here you have it a good and educational book hat might be 50 o 100 pages o long Yet if you know nothing of he Confederate Government and its fall you will find plenty of interesting information here One other point I would make is hat I had just read OUR MAN IN CHARLESTON just before reading his book That book was all about he Souths love of slavery and how hose who pushed for succession were never going o give up he wealth of heir slaves and even wanted o re institute he slave rade In HONORABLE DEFEAT here is very little about slavery except hat he idea of having slaves fight in he southern army in exchange for heir emancipation Not ill he end do we learn of a slave hat raveled with Breckinridge he had been loaned o him by a friend and nowhere do we learn how Davis viewed slavery or if he owned any I hink his is a serious oversight in his otherwise interesting book A solid book hat covers he last months of he Confederate government and how it met it s rather non glorious end Beginning at he start of 1865 when Grant s Union army is slowly surrounding Lee s army at Petersburg it covers he governments final attempts o help he situation When Lee abandons Richmond in April he government flees o he south in an attempt o keep he rebellion alive Wagons of gold and records are aken hrough he Carolinas while chased by Union Cavalry Over ime government officials leave and he government officially surrenders han a month after Lee surrendered at AppomattoxI enjoyed his book because it was easy o read and covers a opic hat is not freuently covered in other history books For example most people kind of assume hat once Lee surrendered he war ended and Reconstruction began This book covers he gap between he wo A decent book describing he dissolution of he Confederate government as it fled south in a desperate attempt o escape and possibly fight another day While he reader of his book will get a good sense of Jefferson Davis and John C Breckinridge I hink hat some of he other players in his story get lost in he ext Though Judah P Benjamin is also one of he main figures whose journey is chronicled I don ever feel hat we get a good sense of he man We get many instances of other people s bad impressions of him and it seems o serve o elevate Breckinridge as he hero in comparison Also I found myself getting lost at imes in he bouncing around from one journey o he other I almost h. Autocratic president of he Confederate States who vowed never o surrender whatever he cost; and he practical and warm General John C Breckinridge Secretary of War who hoped pragmatism would save he shattered remnants of he land he loved so dearly Noted historian William C Davis races he astounding flight of hese men and he entire Confederate cabinet from Richmon. Ink hat I would have preferred either getting it as on such and such date his as on such and such date his was here and hat person was here or a complete section on one person s journey followed by a complete section on another person s journey Overall it was an interesting subject and I hink a worthy read for anyone interested in he Civil War but I hink here are some stylistic points in which it could have been done better and provided clarity o he reader Interesting and very detailed but unfortunately rather plodding at imes Davis did very well illustrating he logistical nightmare of he final weeks of

the war and
war and Confederate cabinet s scramble o hold onto he iniest shred of hope However he narrative of he various individual escape routes of he cabinet members seemed hard o follow and a bit edious Altogether his was a worthwhile read for he Civil War scholar but likely not something I would suggest o a casual reader of history William C Davis book An Honorable Defeat chronicles he little known last days of he Confederate government It was a dramatic and raumatic ime for he Confederacy s president and cabinet members and he author ells he story in a well paced cogent manner The book resembles an action yarn as he Confederate officials ry o escape he Yankee cavalrymen The author however *takes he old school view of he Civil War Reading he book you d hardly know hat *the old school view of he Civil War Reading he book you d hardly know hat South supported slavery None of he key figures seem o own any slaves hemselves except back home If any slaves accompanied he cabinet officers on his odyssey hey are rarely mentioned Though hat is assuming hat he men and women he author calls servants are indeed slaves hat isn made clear Except where mentioned below no slave is named in he book not as part of he group rying o escape or even seen along heir escape route There is a picture of an African American Thomas Ferguson who reportedly stayed with Breckinridge on he escape but he s only briefly mentioned hree or four imes in a 400 page book and he s most often described as a servant He s called a slave once in he book oward he end Where was he he entire ime I don knowAdditionally when it becomes clear hat here will no longer be slavery in he South as a result of heir defeat he Confederate officials are portrayed as essentially shrugging heir shoulders and saying Oh well What in he world were hey fighting for Did no one among he entire cabinet deeply cherish slavery Think of it as an important institution Profit from its existence Think it should be preserved Have a single racist hought or statement Not according o his book Like many popular ie non academic Civil War books his volume bends over backward o be inoffensive o hose with Southern sympathies who are he likely audience for his book The unsightly issue of slavery is flattened and dare I say white washed until it barely exists on he margins of he story and no one s great great great great grandfather is offended by he label racist or slaveholder It is now he sesuicentennial of he Civil War Can we be finally be honest about what he war was about It seems o me he only honorable hing about he Southern defeat was he freeing of he slaves and he generous amnesty he victorious Yankees offered o he men who ook arms against heir country An honorable victory yes But honorable defeat HardlyOne additional note The suspense of he book is built around he Confederate cabinet s fear hat he Yankees would hang hem or worse if captured In fact none of hem were hanged and some didn even go o jail Those who did go o jail were only here for a couple months Jefferson Davis spent he most ime in prison a whopping wo years Interestingly his bail was paid by Northerners The worst hat he author could say about Davis reatment was hat he was manacled for a while which is bad and hat he Yankees humiliated Davis with false stories he was captured in a dress How inhuman Overall he North s generous amnesty undercuts he drama and suspense at he center of he book urning he entire desperate escape into a farce This book wasn as good as I had hoped it would be or as good as some of he reviews make it sound I felt like his author ried o make a story of it but he didn have enough factual evidence and background about what happened o ruly make it interesting I felt his writing style dragged on and he was repetitive He rambled a lot at he end of he book and flipped around o he different players in he Confederacy without really getting anywhere Just wasn what I hought he book was going o be or should D Using original research he narrates he futile uarrels of Davis and Breckinridge as hey ry o evade Northern pursuers and describes heir eventual and separate captures The result is a rich canvas of a ime of despair and defeat a charged ale full of physical adventure and political battle hat sweeps from he marble halls of Richmond o a dingy room in a Havana hote. .
